I apologize if this is not readable. I did not know!!!

in word 2002, "macro could not be created" came up after I fooled around
with templates, etc.

i have deleted normal.dot and uninstalled and reinstalled word and office...
tried all the fixes I could research, but nothing worked.

thank you for your help.

What was the name of the macro?

Word may prevent you from creating a macro of the same name as a
built-in command.

So do any of you have another idea? I am willing to uninstall and reinstall
again, but i cannot seem to change the settings back to normal.

I have a good copy of my registry from 11/9. is there a way to import what i
need from it?

thanking you in advance.

Hi Pat,

I realize you are searching for an answer and if you want to get to
the bottom of your issue then it's best to maintain a single thread on
the subject. Otherwise important information regarding your problem
can easily be overlooked, everything you have tried, haven't tried,
and our suggestions can end up being duplicated. As a result and it
can take longer to resolve the problem.

I believe I asked a follow-up question to one of your posts on this
subject and unfortunately I don't have any additional
ideas/suggestions until I know when you are encountering the error
message. :)

obviously this is my first entry into a newsgroup. i apologize.

i tried a variety of garbage and gibberish. i had a template from which i
attempted to run an existing macro, which then resulted in "insufficient
memory"

i know for sure this is a template problem. the odd thing is that when I
delete all the *.dot files that I created, uninstall word, office and
reinstall.. all my settings from my personalized *.dot files remain in the
new install.

i'd been fooling around in the registry, in the permissions and generally
everything before this happened. my comp runs okay everywhere else. in fact
i can run but not create macros in excel.

i believe my problems may be buried in:

1. locations of files.
2. templates
3. permissions
4. active x

but these are all gueses.

thanks for your consideration.

Hi Pat,

No apologies necessary - we're just here to help and learning the best
methods for getting your problem resolved is equally important. :)

Typically, reinstalling Office does little good since it doesn't reset
your personal settings to the defaults. Typically problems such as
this have nothing to do with the Word installation but rather changes
you have made.

So, let's start with some general background questions:

- Is the macro you are attempting to run stored in your Normal.dot or
another template? If another template are you able to create a new
macro in your Normal.dot?

General suggestions based on what I can ascertain thus far:

It sounds like you may have inadvertently changed the permissions on
your personal folders. What operating system are you using? You might
check the permissions assigned to the following:

- C:\Documents and Settings\<User Name>\Application Data\Microsoft\...

- User Templates folder. In Word take a look under Tools/Options/File
Locations to find this location.

- Check permissions assigned to your Temp folder.

If the permission check out then what operating system are you using?
What is the location of your User Templates folder?

Hi Pat,

Great to hear!

Yes, if your Temp folder was set to Read-only then your applications
were not able to create the necessary temp files. In this case,
creating macros would not have been the only problem you ultimately
encounter.

Thanks for the update. :)

FWIW, it's not typical to have c:\prog files\microsoft office\1033 as your
user templates folder. This is where Word puts its own ("installed")
templates, but Normal.dot and user-created templates are typically in a
folder with the name Templates; in Word 2000, the default path will be
C:\Documents and Settings\Profile Name\Application Data\Microsoft\Templates
