Text overlay problems continuing...

R

Robin

I've posted a couple of times about this problem and have
gotten very helpful responses - thank you to those who've
responded. However, I still can't seem to resolve the
problem completely. I use FP 2000. I have a .gif image to
which I've added text (a text box). But the image will not
publish with the text overlay included. The strange thing
is that I have another page (file) with a .gif image/text
overlay, and that image/text is fine. Among my web files,
both .gif images are present. I do not see separate files
for the text overlays; are there supposed to some? If not,
then why is it that one text overlay works and the other
doesn't? The only thing I can think of is that this is a
path problem; but I can't think of where the path might be
broken.

I compared the HTML code in the page that's working to the
page that isn't. I found that in the broken page,
the "alt=" portion of the code was missing so I added
that, but then only the text published; the graphic itself
was broken. Ack!! In order to get the graphic to publish,
I had to change the file name - but then (of course) the
text was gone.

Another problem is that any time I make a change to
the .gif file, such as a crop, it won't alter its status
at all in the Publish Web dialog box; it shows as "Up to
Date." This problem was described in an earlier post and
the solution I was given worked once, but I can't get it
to work again. At that time, I re-saved the page/image,
recalculated the links, re-published and cleaned out my IE
cache, in that order. But this method now has no effect.
Thus, re-naming the file as mentioned above.

I'm now afraid to make any changes whatsoever to the page,
because I'm afraid the image will be lost again, and it
takes me so long to get it back. I'd probably let it go
but for the fact that it's our home page and it's
important.

Can anyone tell me what is going on? Are these bugs in the
program? Or is there something I'm not doing properly? I
need a detailed answer if possible.

Hi, Robin,

Could you please post the HTML for both pages? Or at least the HTML that
contains the image and text overlay? (Please don't both the actual pages.)

HI Lisa,
Thank you so much for answering. There is a lot of code on
each page so for now I've sent only the image HTML. If you
need the entire pages, I will be happy to send them.
Thanks again! Hope you can help!

Robin,

The code for both looks fine and I just made a quick one myself and my code
looks like yours. Try this. Remove the spaces from the image filename then
recreate it and see if that helps. The space is the only difference I see.

Lisa Wollin \(Microsoft\)

Hi, Robin,

I did the same in FP 2003 without any problem. I've forwarded your message
to our FP test team to see if they can determine why you are having a
problem. I will respond as soon as I hear something from them.

Hi Robin,

Is there a link on the internet I can browse to to see this? I'm not able
to repro your issue and am curious about it.

D

David Berry

Robin,

Is there an site where you can post your page? Have you tried creating a
blank new page and then recreating the image map to see if you have the same
problem? I'm sorry but I've done several tests and I can't reproduce this.

R

Robin

Hi John,

Here's the page that's giving me problems:
www.rihs.org/libraryhome.htm. The b&w image is the one
that's supposed to have the text that says "The library
building as a church circa 1880 (view from northwest
corner of Hope and Power Streets."

The page that IS working, is at www.rihs.org/ref%20cem.htm
(no spaces in the file name). The image is about half-way
down the page, it's a cemetery stone.

At this point, the only thing I can think of is that I was
using FP 2000 for the image that works, and now I'm using
FP 2002.

Please let me know if you need more info. Thank you so
much for your help. I look forward to hearing back from
you.

Hi David,

I haven't tried a blank new page...that's a good idea.
Also I sent the page links to John Jansen at MS, who also
responded to this post (see my reply to his post). He's
going to look at them to see if he can spot something
amiss. Please feel free to take a look as well. If he
can't find anything, I may just have to start with a clean
slate. I really appreciate your help. I'll post to the
group when I find the solution (see how optimistic I am?
lol).

Thanks Robin. Please do create a new page, at least as a test, and let me
know what happens. I see in your source code that the image that is broken
is not being referenced from the proper source location, which means for
some reason the image is not being saved as a text on gif image.

The overlay image is not on your server at

Dear John,
No success! I created a new blank page and re-created the
problem page's layout. The problem image is originally in
my folders as a .jpg, so I selected the .jpg file and
added it to the new page. Then I added the text box, and
got the prompt that it will be converted to .gif. Ok,
fine. Then I saved the page, at which point I got a prompt
to save two embedded files: the problem image and our
logo .gif. The default action for both was "Overwrite."
This is the point at which I get confused - I feel that
whatever I choose at this point is related to the problem.
I chose to overwrite the files. The name of the original
page was libraryhome.htm, so I named the new page
libraryhome2.htm and saved it. I then went into the file
dialog box and deleted the original libraryhome.htm file,
then renamed the libraryhome2 file with the old file name
libraryhome. When I went to publish, the new file showed
up as "Publish" but the .gif image showed up as "Up to
Date." I knew what was going to happen, but I published
the libraryhome.htm file anyway and sure enough, the
graphic is broken. I tried publishing the .gif file anyway
and it made no difference. I am at a TOTAL loss at this
point. What am I doing wrong? Was I not supposed to
overwrite the .gif files? If not, what action do I choose?
Thanks again for your help.
Robin

The save embedded file dialog is saving images on your page - not htm pages
When you select to Save your page (w/ the new images on it) FP is asking where do you want to save the new images in your web - it
also is saving the page as a .htm so you do not need to rename your page after the save
If you select each image (in the dialog) you can give it a different image name (ie: logo.gif or anything.gif) and a folder location
in your FP web

Hi Robin,

The fact that the .gif image is up-to-date makes sense, because when you do
an overlay, there are no changes actually made to the image, only to the
overlay file.

Try just doing the following:

1. Right click the image you want to use for your overlay and copy it
2. Now paste it (this way we can remove one possible issue, which is the
"overwrite" option)
3. Drag this image onto a new page
4. Put some text on top of it (click OK to convert to a gif)
5. Save the page and just click OK to any and all default settings
6. File > Preview in browser

What happens?

If this fails, can you click on Start > My Computer
Then Tools > Folder Options
Then "View" tab and check the box to "Show hidden files and folders"
Close FrontPage and relaunch it, then try again?

Thanks!

Hi John,

Sorry I haven't been back in touch sooner, our library was
closed last week and I didn't check the board. I am going
to give what you suggest below, a try this week, and then
I will let you know the result. As always, I greatly
appreciate your time in trying to resolve this!!

Hi Stefan,

Sorry it's taken me so long to respond...was away from my
desk all last week. I had already tried re-naming my files
in the "save embedded file" dialog...if I remember
correctly, as a result the image published but not the
text. It's crazy. I'm trying an idea suggested by John
Jansen and I'll post the results asap. Thanks so much for
your continued attention to this. I really can't determine
if it's me or the program.

Robin

The save embedded file dialog is saving images on your page - not htm pages
When you select to Save your page (w/ the new images on
it) FP is asking where do you want to save the new images
in your web - it
also is saving the page as a .htm so you do not need to
rename your page after the save
If you select each image (in the dialog) you can give it
a different image name (ie: logo.gif or anything.gif) and
a folder location
in your FP web

| Dear John,

Hi John,

A couple of things: I tried what you suggested below, and
that worked (in Preview). The problem is, I've been able
to see the image as intended in Preview before, but then
it still doesn't work on the Internet. Also, the "Show
hidden files and folders" option was already enabled in My
Computer.

But here's something else. We had a computer technician in
yesterday and he looked at the problem. He said that when
I was being prompted to save the embedded file, I wasn't
choosing a folder to save to, so the image was only being
saved to my local drive, not the web folder on our
network. So I chose a random page in my web, added the
image and text, and saved the image to a folder
called "images" that already exists among my web files (on
our network drive). I went to File / Publish Web and both
files showed up as "Publish" status (in separate folders).
So I published both, went to the Internet and the image
was broken.

I should mention that when I was using FP 2000 (I'm now
using FP 2002), this was not a problem. When I saved an
embedded file with text, I didn't choose a folder (through
ignorance) and the image still published without a
problem. In any case, at this point I may just abandon
what I'm doing and try to caption the image. I'm still
open to suggestions if you have any, though.

Thanks for all your help,
Robin

Hi Robin,

It sounds like something changed on the server between the time you
published the images that work and published the images that don't work.

You mention saving to the Network Place, are you saving to the HTTP location
on the server, or are you saving to the \\share location? You need to save
this to the HTTP location.

Hi John,

This has to be the longest thread ever! lol If you mean am
I saving to the webhost's (Earthlink) server, I believe
the answer's no. I'm saving to our H:\\ (network) drive on
our own server. I understand what you're saying; now I
just have to figure out how to save the file to the HTTP
server. I believe you must be right about something
changing on the server because I never had to go thru this
before.

If I ever get this to work, I will definitely let you
know!

Robin
