text saved as ms application.

Hi,
I had a very strange thing happen last night. I saved 2 text files on
notepad and went to bed. this morning the computer had updates so I let them
run. When I checked on the two files I saved last night they were both saved
as ms applications. how did that happen. can I retrieve the text files? I
have Vista

they were both saved as ms applications.
You did not say what kind of application. If a Word file just open and save
as text.
