Text somehow linked?

I have been a word user for years and years and have
repeatedly come across this problem but have decided to
find a solution today.

When working in some documents the text seems somehow to
be linked -- if I bold one section, the entire document
bolds, or if I bullet one section the entire document has
bullets on every line. By hitting "undo" the unwanted
bold or bullets go away, but clearly this is just a quick
fix.

Can anyone help me?
