Text substitution

Hi,
how do you add such things as a revision number? I mean you cant go around
the whole document changing this information manually each time it changes.
A text substitution function would be nice where you define a text variable
globally that you only modify and all occurences in the document changes,
similar to fields. I found the DocInfo->RevisionNumber field but it is only
a dumb save counter.

Using W2000, all SP's on WinXP Pro.

Thanks,

Hi, Goran,

There are various ways, but the most reliable is to use a document property
(either use one of the standard ones such as Comments, or make one of your
own on the Custom tab of the Properties dialog) that you update manually
when you decide that the revision number needs to change.

To display your property in the document, insert a DocProperty field
containing the name of the property; for example

{ DocProperty Comments }

will display the Comments item from the Properties dialog. (Note that the
braces must be created by pressing Ctrl+F9, or else go through the Insert >
Field dialog.) You can put in as many of the same field as you want,
anywhere in the document.

When you change the property in the Properties dialog, the fields don't
automatically update. You can select all (Ctrl+A) and update (F9), or you
can just go into Print Preview and back to the document (assuming you have
checked "Update fields" in Tools > Options > Print). The latter method is
more reliable if you have fields in the header or footer.

Hi Jay,
the Properties method was exactly what I was looking for. Thanks!
