how do make letters and words and parts of my presentation transition with an effect?

See PPt Help on Custom Animation. The feature itself is listed in the Slide
Show menu. Post back with any specific questions, but we need complete &
accurate details as well as what specific version you're using - you haven't
even given any indication of X, 2004, 2008... There's not much to offer if
we don't even know what you're working with - each version of the software
is [at least] a little different from the others & update level of OS &
Office can also make a difference.
