Text wrapping in merged cells

Is it possible to use text wrapping in merged cells? So
far I've had no luck making it work.

Yes, just highlight the cells you want to merge and wrap.
Right click and go to format cells. On the Allignment tab
at the bottom, check wrap text and merge. It should work
fine.
