I've seen this issue more with the older versions of Word, but it can occur
in Word X as well. The problem is mainly seen in what font is used. The
default font, Times, seems to be one of the worst offenders. Try using a
different font and see how that improves the character spacing issue.

I frequently have my document zoomed to 125 or 150% due to the smallness
of the text using my 1280x1024 flat panel monitor. With the document
zoomed, the word spacing is inconsistent. Some words appear to have
double spaces between them and others appear to have no spaces - however
they all actually have one space as can be seen when the zoom is
reverted to 100%. This is true in normal or page layout and all views.
Any thoughts on how to rectify this - it is fairly annoying. I am
running 10.2.8 on a G4 DP867 w/ Word X service release #1.
Thanks.
You are correct. I typically use Geneva font. Arial seems to work fine.
If you can think of any way I can get Geneva to work I would appreciate it.
Thanks.
I have a 1280 x 1024 flat screen too. I use Times in 11 point for body text,
displayed at 110%, and I have no problem. In bold, however, the problem is
as you say. I don't use bold in 11 point so that's an academic point for me.
The reason I work in 11 point for body text, apart from screen clarity, is
that in combination with a slightly more open (13 point) line spacing it's
nicely readable on screen and when printed looks good -- and is also more
easily readable -- than 12 point in the closer single line spacing.
Of course there is no reason to view the document in the same font as is
printed, especially if the document uses styles entirely (i.e., not manually
imposed formatting).
I'm in OS 9 with Word 2001, so there could be a software-induced difference,
of course.
