What version of PowerPoint are you using? In 2007, you set the font of a
text box, right click on the text box and choose Set Default Text Box.

As David says the version is very important here! If you have 2007 then
you're good to go. In earlier versions though if you do the logical thing >
Insert a textbox > set the font > Right click > No Set Default Textbox
visible but "Set Autoshape defaults" looks good. Select it and it seems to
work fine the next textbox will have your new font. Here's the catch when you
insert a SHAPE next it will have the fill and line of the textbox ie probably
none!

In earlier version insert a SHAPE add some text and change the font then set
the Autoshape defaults. TextBoxes will still have no fill.

hey D, thanks! I use powerpoint 2003. I understand how to change the
formating of the textbox when I've filled it with text. my problem is that I
would like to change the DEFAULT: that is, when I first open a textbox the
formating is arial 18. I would prefer a different font when it automatically
opens. know how to change that default?

Yes, that's correct.

But there's differences between shapes (regular rectangles, for example),
text boxes, and placeholders ("click to add text").

He may be getting white text because that's the default that was set for the
AutoShapes -- which is what the rectangle (shapes) often uses by default
because it's filled with color. I don't believe you can get white as the
default for shapes and black as the default for textboxes because textboxes
are like a subset of shapes. I could be wrong about that, but I believe
that's the case.

Hmmm....He opened to a new, blank slideshow and changed the autoshape default
to no line, no fill. Then he changed the text box default to black font,
Arial 24 pt font size. Now when he draws a new text box, he get black text,
but it defaults to Calibri and 18 pt font.

Any thoughts?

Also, am I correct that the default Autoshape is specific to the machine the
application is installed on and has priority? In other words, whatever .pot
(x or m) that spawned any slideshow he may be working in, will NOT have
precedence over his newly defined default setting choices for new text boxes
he will draw moving forward?

Yes, that's correct.

But there's differences between shapes (regular rectangles, for example),
text boxes, and placeholders ("click to add text").

He may be getting white text because that's the default that was set for the
AutoShapes -- which is what the rectangle (shapes) often uses by default
because it's filled with color. I don't believe you can get white as the
default for shapes and black as the default for textboxes because textboxes
are like a subset of shapes. I could be wrong about that, but I believe
that's the case.

No, it should be attached to the presentation.

I wouldn't give an autoshape no line and no fill as a default, but that's
me. When he draws a line, the line won't be visible if he does that.

You said he's using 2007.

I'd open the new, blank presentation. Draw an oval and give it at least a
line. Remove the fill if desired, sure. Then right-click and Set as Default
Shape.

Then draw a textbox. Format the font Arial 24 pt and right-click, Set as
Default Textbox.

Save the file.

Now when he or anyone else opens that file and inserts a shape or a textbox,
that's what the default textbox and shape will be.

It works here.

In fact, I usually set these things up when I'm creating templates so the
users have what I consider to be the appropriate default textbox and shape
settings. Or as close as I can get them, anyway. ;-) Presentations based on
those templates will use the default shape and textbox I set (unless the
user changes it on the template or in their particular file, of course).

You do understand that this is not going to change the default textbox and
shape on all new, blank files, right? If that's your question, then there
are a few more steps.
