That pesky SBCMSYNC.DLL error...

W

I have read several requests for help here (and on other blogs, throug
normal web searches, support.microsoft.com, etc.) about this error.
have tried absolutely every suggestion - none of them fit, mostly du
to the absence of the add-ins listed as the perpetrator(s) or n
extend.dat file...

I got a new PC, OS-XP Media Center. I uninstalled things I wanted t
replace w/my usual apps - took off Works 8.0 and loaded my slightl
older Works suite with the Street/Map app. Also removed trial Offfic
2003 and installed my Office XP Pro and also Publisher 2002. Added
couple of other apps I use for business. I then used FAST to loa
settings, My Documents, etc. on the new PC from my laptop, operatin
under XP Home. I made sure I used the FAST required for XPMC t
initiate the process. I have a modest LAN set up here, so that's ho
everything moved from A to B.

I have been getting 2 startup errors - the Excel error (acclink.xla)
think I fixed. This Outlook error pops up twice every time I start th
app, then Outlook goes merrily about its business as if nothin
happened. I can live with it if need be, but I would rather never se
it again.

There is no extend.dat file anywhere on this new PC. There is no smal
business or sync add-in anywhere, either, and I have looked in ever
folder I can think of based upon this error (I tried to paste the imag
of the pop-up here but could not):

'C:\DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS\OWNER.YOUR-DC3E0B8F38\APPLICATIO
DATA\MICROSOFT\ADDINS\C:\PROGRAM FILES\MICROSOF
OFFICE\OFFICE\SBCMSYNC.DLL' IS NOT A VALID OFFICE ADD-IN

This is exactly what pops up - I cannot figure out how that "C:\Progra
Files\..." got embedded in the middle of what seems to start out as
normal pathname, but - that is what I have.

If any of you can offer me advice, I would dearly love to hear fro
you.

Thanks so much for the most excellent resource you maintain here

That happens when you use FAST and when the software installed on both the
PCs isn't the same. Extend.dat sure is on your system. Make sure you include
hidden files/folders in your search. Otherwise use OutlookTools (free) to
locate the folder. The "local Outlook data" path will take you directly to
the right location;

Robert, thank you so very much for your advice. I did as you said - sur
enough, there was a hidden folder I could not see until I checked tha
option. Only one file found - I did change the name of it - had alread
closed Outlook beforehand. After renaming it, I opened Outlook - thre
times.

Same rotten error messages.

I printed off the rather lengthy instructions
(http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;235009)
where this procedure was recommended (I stupidly did not check "hidde
files" before). I will read what they say to do after this step fails
because it is the only one that I could not try earlier.

I will update this thread again after I find the next step (if there i
one), or that I am once again stumped.

Your second suggestion was to help me find extend.dat, yes?

Onward ...

I do not have SBCM on this machine - so the remainder of the tech advic
I printed off does not seem to apply here.

I am wondering if the problem here is that "C:\Program Files\...
embedded in the middle of the pathname I see in the error message.

'C:\DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS\OWNER.YOUR-DC3E0B8F38\APPLICATION
DATA\MICROSOFT\ADDINS\*_C:\PROGRAM_FILES\_*MICROSOFT
OFFICE\OFFICE\SBCMSYNC.DLL'

I have never seen a pathname like that before. Is it possible tha
something got screwed up in the registry when I did FAST and th
pathnames from the old laptop and this new machine accidentally go
crossed?

Any comments welcome.
