The Application Word Has Unexpectedly Quit

All of the sudden I'm getting the message "The Application Word Has Unexpectedly Quit" whenever I try to open Word for Mac X. I've tried reinstalling the whole application, but I still have the same problem. I've read in some earlier threads that I should try deleting my Word Preference files. But I haven't been able to find my Word Preference files to delete them. Ideas? Thanks. Oh, I'm running OS version 10.2.8 on a G4.

~/Library/Preferences/Microsoft/Word Settings (10)

where ~ is short for your own user directory.

You might also try hiding your normal template first.

It is usually lurking in
/Applications/Microsoft Office X/Templates/Normal
Stop Word, Drag normal to the desktop. Start Word.
If it works. Use the organiser on the freshly made copy of Word and
your old one.

Another common reason for the misbehaviour is that Word is throwing a
hissy fit about one of your fonts. If you have been fiddling with your
fonts recently, then stick that right at the top of your list of things
to try. Google this group for the (complicated) instructions for
checking your fonts. Why oh why can't Word report font errors politely
instead of sticking its fingers down its throat? Even South Park is
more civilsed than that.

Oh no They've killed Kenny^h^h^h Word.

It worked to go to ~/Library/Preferences/Microsoft/Word Settings (10), trash it, and then restart. Thanks a lot.

I'm waiting for Apple to alter the Mac OS (X and 9) to remove the word
"unexpectedly" from the notice if the application's name is "Word" :*)

"The application Word has gone on an extended lunch break."

Well, they better hurry up: Word has been running continuously on this
machine for around three months now (apart from when I have installed new
versions). Word X is a bit of a horror story, but the next version is very
solid.
