It seems to me that the benefits of an email address column that
contains the domain of the sender were so compelling that Microsoft
would certainly have included it in Outlook 2007. So far, I cannot
find it there. Perhaps someone knows how to add the column to the
normal display options.
For those who don't understand why this is important,
let's review why displaying the address field column in form
"(e-mail address removed)" would be a good thing.
1. Managing email addresses.
The display addresses alone are inconsistent and several different
versions may apply to the same email address, frustrating attempts to
logically sort or group them.
2. Reviewing junk mail.
When reviewing the contents of the junk mail folder before deleting,
the display addresses are pretty useless. This tedious process would
be a little easier if we could see the domain part of the email
address. It wouldn't be perfect, but it would be one way to assist
users in the difficult task of managing junk mail. You would
certainly be more likely to spot email you really wanted. Here is an
example of a few names that appeared in my junk folder:
Jacob Davis
Jeffry Kane
Jenelle Thao
Jerry Kendall
Joa Kell
Joanna Belanger
Kara Tackett
This is what I SHOULD be able to see:
Jacob Davis (e-mail address removed)
Jeffry Kane (e-mail address removed)
Jenelle Thao (e-mail address removed)
Jerry Kendall (e-mail address removed)
Joa Kell (e-mail address removed)
Joanna Belanger (e-mail address removed)
Kara Tackett (e-mail address removed)
Why is this better? Well, for one, I can see that some of them are
from countries I do not communicate with and are probably junk. Others
have display names that clearly do not match their email address and
are probably bogus. None of the domains belong to my friends, family,
or business associates.
3. Adding the sender's domain to safe sender's list.
Outlook has a junk mail feature available when you right click a
message in a folder: "Add Sender's Domain (@example.com) to Safe
Senders List". Trouble is, you CAN'T SEE THE DOMAIN so you don't
know what you doing!
