The "ch" unit of measurement in the ruler.

Paul628

What is a "ch"? My MS/Word2003 ruler shows ch's instead of inches.
There are about 6.55 ch's to an inch.
I used TOOLS | OPTIONS | GENERAL to change my measurment units to inches, but it had no effect on the ruler display.
My Word2003 ruler still shows ch's with an ordinaary page being about 55 ch's wide.
What is a ch? And how can I get my Word2003 ruler to show inches again?
Because I don't think I can find this site again, please send your reply by email to (e-mail address removed)
Thank you. Paul628 December 21, 2003

Doug Robbins - Word MVP - DELETE UPPERCASE CHARACT

Hi Paul,

They are Character Units that come about through having Asian Language
support enabled. To see how to revert to the ruler being displayed in the
Unit of Measure selected under Tools>Options>General, see the following page
of fellow MVP, Graham Mayor's website at:

http://www.gmayor.com/Character_Units.htm

Please post any further questions or followup to the newsgroups for the
benefit of others who may be interested. Unsolicited questions forwarded
directly to me will only be answered on a paid consulting basis.

Hope this helps

Doug: Thank you so very very much for solving my Word2003
ruler "ch" problem. I spent more than 12 hours searching
for help on this including the various Word2003 help
screens, the MS knowledge base articles, and I even re-
installed / repaired Office2003. But nothing helped until
I saw your reply to my bulletin board posting. Thank you
so very very much for taking the time to help me.

But on a related matter, I am very very frustrated with
Microsoft about this. Therefore, by posting this on their
bulletin board, I hope this feedback gets back to them.
The solution to this problem should have been documented
on the MS/Word2003 help screen for changing the unit of
measurement. Omissions like this would be acceptable ONLY
if MS would make it easier to talk (or even write to) a
real live person when problems like this occur.

On another related matter, I want you (and Microsoft) to
know that I have just installed VB.Net2003 and it does not
work. Whenever I try to run/start any project, I get
a "Microsoft Development Environment" error msg box that
says:

"An unhandled exception of
type 'System.NullReferenceException' occurred in
system.windows.forms.dll. Additional information: Object
reference not set to an instance of an object."

This happens even when I open a completely empty project
with nothing more on it than an empty form. By tomorrow I
hope to find a bulletin board on which to post a more
detailed explanation of my problem in the hope that
someone like you might help me.

Thanks again for your kindness.

To respond to your complaint. Inevitably, many newer features don't make it
into Word's Help file (though it's inexcusable to have omitted this one,
which was introduced in Word 2002), which is the reason for having so many
Knowledge Base articles. There is one on this topic: "WD2002: Cannot Change
Ruler Measurement from Character Units" at
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=299339.

Suzanne: Thank you so very much for your personal reply to my posting. It
is more than I expected from Microsoft and goes a long way to making me feel
better about my grievance.

But you guys still have a ways to go.

Nevertheless, I want to thank you (personally) for your personal
contribution to helping with Microsoft/Customer relations. Kudos for you.
