The command cannot be performed because a dialog box is open

After upgrading from Office 97 to Office 2003, numerous users throughout my
company have been receiveing the "The command cannot be performed because a
dialog box is open" error when opening a Word Document from WinExp or
Outlook. Tried the "winword /r" didn't work. We are not running Norton AV.
We have McAfee. Any suggestions? Could this be due to a corrupted
Normal.dot? We have tried deleting and letting Word recreate another but this
has failed also.
Any help would be appreciated.

I know you say you're not running Norton AV, but this does sound like a
Norton problem. If once upon a time there was a version of Norton Antivirus
installed on the computer, then the Office Plugin from Norton could still be
registered in Windows even if Norton has been uninstalled. Search for the
OFFICEAV.DLL file on the hard drive (include system and hidden
files/folders). If you find it, note the folder where it is located, and use
the "regsvr32 /u" method described in
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=329820 to unregister the DLL.
