The Correct Century Font?

W

Word Guy 11

I need (for a court document) to have a font that is one of these three:
Century Expanded, Century Schoolbook, or New Century Schoolbook.

The fonts that come with Microsoft Word seemed to have every font one would
ever want---but alas, none of these three is on the long list. However, what
is on the list is Century.

I am wondering if by chance the "Century" font on the ones that come with
Word is a short way of saying either "Century Expanded," "Century
Schoolbook," or "New Century Schoolbook." Could that be---or am I going to
have to actually buy one of these three? (I have checked a couple of "free"
fonts sites---and they seem to want more information about one than a loan
application (everything short of blood type and SSN . . . ); better to pay
if one has to . . . Anyway, what exactly is Century font? Thanks in advance
.. . .

I wouldn't assume that Century is the same. If you have a legal document
that is specifying which font yo use, my advice would be to follow their
rules to the letter.

Century Schoolbook came with Access 97 SR2, Creative Writer 2, Office 2000
Premium, Office 4.3 Professional, Office 97 Small Business Edition SR2,
Office 97 SR1a, Office Professional Edition 2003, PhotoDraw 2000, Picture
It! 98, Publisher 2000, Publisher 97, Publisher 98, TrueType Font Pack, and
some versions of Office 2007.

Not all fonts are free and not all fonts come with every version of Office.
Fonts.com is a safe vendor of fonts.

"Century Schoolbook" and "New Century Schoolbook" are probably what
they want.

Century is a font designed in the early 20th century that I find
particularly ugly -- large x-height, heavy serifs, maybe the
inspiration for Knuth's "Computer Modern" which is what you get when
you type in TeX if you don't fix it.

Century and Century Schoolbook are Agfa Monotype fonts, copyright 1992. Both
authored by Morris Fuller Benton.

Century Expanded is a Bitstream font, copyright 1990.

"Century which is supplied by a number of foundries in different
forms, was cut in 1894 by Linn Boyd Benson in collaboration with T. L.
DeVinne to meet the needs of the _Century Magazine_, who wanted a
blacker and more readable face than the one they had been previously
using .... Morris Fuller Benton designed several versions of the
typeface and around 1900 American Typefounders brought out Century
Expanded to meet the Typographical Union Standard of the day ..."(*The
International Type Book*, Van Nostrand, 1990, p. 46)

The fonts mentioned below were digitized from varieties of this.

Century and Century Schoolbook are Agfa Monotype fonts, copyright 1992. Both
authored by Morris Fuller Benton.

Century Expanded is a Bitstream font, copyright 1990.
