The current user account doesn't have permission to convert or enable this datab

Hi,

I get this error when I try converting an Access 97
database to Access 2002 on a XP machine..
"The current user account doesn't have permission to
convert or enable this database."

I thought the Access 97 mdb might have been secured, I
checked it and found that it is only linked to System.mdw
The 97 mdb file works on all NT machines with Access 97
installed on it. But when I try converting it using Access
2002 Database utility for converting it gives me this error

Please help...

Jack.

That statement makes no sense. A database can be 'linked' to more than one
specific mdw. It sounds to me as though the database has been secured.

How are you opening it now - a shortcut? What is the target of this
shortcut?

If not a shortcut, then what workgroup are you joined to by default (check
via Start, Run, wrkgadm.exe).

The Access 97 version was secured.
Now when I double click on that Access 97 app on Win Xp
(with Access 2002). It gives an error that ""The current
user account doesn't have permission to convert or enable
this database."

I can understand that I was not the one who created this
Database and i need administer privelges. Is there a
workaround for this (without creating a new mdb in 2002
and then importing the data into it)

Now how do i find out who created that database?
How do I grant a new user (myself) administer priveleges?

If I cannot trace the owner of the DB then how can I
convert it ?

Thanks,
Jack

You can open the 97 app in Access 2002 by using the
workgroup file it was secured with in 97. Create a
desktop shortcut with a target of

"c:\pathtomsaccess.exe" "path to mdb" /wrkgrp "path to 97
workgroup.mdw"

Another alternative is to open it in 97, unsecure it and
then convert to 2002.

If it was secured properly to begin with, then no (not
much use to security if it were that easy).

You need the username/password of a user that is a member
of the Admins group.

Thanks for the response.
Actually in the system.mdw there is only one user "Admin".

Here are the steps that I did:
I logged in to my computer (Win NT) using my user ID "ABC"
and I opend the .mdb file and then went to security->user&
Group Accounts. I added my Win ID (ABC) as a new user and
added myself to the "Admins" group.

Now I went to Security->User & Group Permissions and I
tried giving permissions to myself (ABC) for the following
objects.
Database - gave an error saying "you donot have
permissions forthe <current database>"
Table - gave the same error when I try to give permission
to the system tables..

Why I did the above was to give myself all the permissions
so that when i copy these mdb and mdw and login using the
same user ID on my winXP machine and when I doubleclick
the mdb it would allow me to choose to convert to 2002
format. But still it fails.

Now how do i correct this situation ? should loging to
WINNT machine as "Admin" user and then give the
permissions to myself (ABC) and then again load it on XP
and try and running...
Thanks for all your help..

Hi,

the easiest way to overcome that problem is : Create a new database in Access 97
(!!!!) import everything from the semi-secured database (incl. Menues and
Import/Export) and then convert that unsecured database. Thats done within
seconds (if Access 97 and Access XP available) and works reliable. Tested with
lots of different databases ...

That's the way it should be, good.
Here are the steps that I did:

and I opend the .mdb file and then went to security->user&
Group Accounts. I added my Win ID (ABC) as a new user and
added myself to the "Admins" group.

You should not have done this.
Now I went to Security->User & Group Permissions and I
tried giving permissions to myself (ABC) for the following
objects.
Database - gave an error saying "you donot have
permissions forthe <current database>"
Table - gave the same error when I try to give permission
to the system tables..

This makes sense if the database was properly secured to begin with (and you
shouldn't assign permissions to any system tables).
Why I did the above was to give myself all the permissions
so that when i copy these mdb and mdw and login using the
same user ID on my winXP machine and when I doubleclick
the mdb it would allow me to choose to convert to 2002
format. But still it fails.

You need to find the mdw that the 97 version was secured with. It was not
secured using system.mdw, but a different workgroup file. You also need to
join this workgroup (Tools, security workgroup administrator), and log in as
a member of the Admins group. If you don't have this, you may be out of
luck.
