"The custom dictionary is full. The word was not added." @$%&!

I am getting the subject error message. Knowledgebase knows the error
message but suggests to create a new custom dictionary (which worked but
didn't fix the issue) or that the spelling checker files are corrupted
(I renamed the files msspell3.dll and Mssp3en.lex as suggested and
triggered a re-install of the spell check feature, which also didn't
help - I was able to add exactly ONE new word after which I am now again
getting the error...).

After that it runs out of ideas.

Any ideas what else could cause this bug and how can one fix this?

This is on Windows XP (with SP2++) and Word 2002 (plus SP3)

Michael

PS.: NO, my hard disk is NOT full (I have >29GB of space left...)

With all Office applications closed and Outlook Express closed:

Navigate to the file custom.dic. It is just an ASCII/ANSI text file of
ordered words. Open it in Notepad. Delete a dozen or do words. While you
have it open, scan it to make sure it is alphabetised.

Save the file as Mydictionary.dic or whatever you please provided the
extension is dic.

Rename custom.dic to custom.di!

Close and reopen notepad. Save a blank document as custom.dic.

Open Word. Open a document with spelling errors. Do a check.

If OK, Navigate to Tools Options Spelling & Grammar Custom
Dictionaries. Add Mydictionaty.dic.

OK out. Do a spell check.

Let us know.
