the delete key does not work in tracked changes mode

In tracked changes mode in Word 2003, I cannot delete text using the delete
key or the backspace key, but can through the cut function. The wordperfect
checkboxes are not checked in tools/options/general.

When you are tracking changes, deletions will not be final until you accept
the changes.

When you delete text with Track Changes turned on, it changes color
and appears in strikethrough format. When you Accept the change, it
goes away forever. (Unless you Undo.) (Or maybe you've set it to put
your deletions into balloons instead.)
