So many of the words in the in-built dictionary in Word 2000 have incorrect
spelling. How can I find the folder to correct these words to the right
spelling

I just checked a Word document with the word "exercise" underlined in red. I
right-clicked and the English-U.S. dictionary suggested "exercice" and
"exercices". These are incorrect. My Word program is set to English-U.S.

Have you checked the language actually assigned to the text in question?
When you right-click on the marked word, select Language from the shortcut
menu and see which language is checked. You can also change the language
that way. My version of Word 2003 does *not* mark "exercise" as wrong or
suggest "exercice" as a correction unless I have the language set to French.
If you have not disabled language autodetection, there's no telling what
language is assigned to any specific word.

Thank you, Suzanne. I was unaware that a document could have been set to
another language despite how the computer is set. I received the document in
question from another source.
