"The disk is full trying to write to drive" in Word 2008

Version: 2008 Operating System: Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) Processor: Intel The old and annoying "disk is full" error is still there in Word 2008.
When I edit a document with a lot of mathematical formulas, I get often the following error:

Auf "Startvolume" ist kein Speicherplatz frei. Machen Sie Speicherpaltz auf diesem Laufwerk frei. Versuche Sie Folgendes: Schliessen Sie nicht benötigte Dokumente, Programme und Fenster. Speichern Sie das Dokument auf einem anderen Datenträger.

It says that my internal harddisc is full. That can not be true. I have a 1TB harddisc with 760 GB of free space. I have got the new iMac and run MacOS 10.6.2. and Office 2008 with the latest updates.
I have also came accross with this error message with Office 2004 and my old PowerMac G5.
What ist the reason of this error message and how can I solve this problem?

Thanks for any help.

Hi Matthias,

Can you use Save As and successfully save the document in Word 97-2004
format? If that works, can you open the saved file and then Save As in
Word document in the new (.docx) format?

Hi Matthias:

The error is not specific. It simply means "Failed to write the file", it
does not know why.

In your case, there is probably some broken code in the file. Try what Jim
suggested. If it still won't save:

* Try saving "half" the document.
* Try saving without any equations (you can put them back later).

When you get the file saved in .docks, you can then repair it.

The error message is very old: back then, the most common reason a file
would not save was because the disk was full. Now, there can be many
reasons.

For documents containing equations, one reason can be that the version of
Equation Editor that created the equations is different to the version of
Equation Editor installed on your machine. This can happen if you have
worked on the document in a different version of Word.

Another common cause is Tracked Changes. If you resolve all the tracked
changes, a problem document will often save.

Hope this helps
