"The Document Name or Path Is Not Valid"

P

Paul Moloney

I now get the following error when I tried to open a particular document
(.doc) after moving it from a network share to my local disk:

"The Document Name or Path Is Not Valid"

I've found this support page:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=328100

I already have SP3 installed, so that isn't the problem. I've
tried "Open and Repair" with no luck. I've tried starting Word
in safe mode and using both "Open" and "Open and repair". I've tried
disabling smart tags. I also tried the RepairSmartTags registry edit
mentioned here:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;832890

I also checked this page:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;224016

but most fixes assume your document was a web page. Only one applied,
and that was to do with international characters in the file name. I renamed
it to "a.doc", with no luck.

The original page mentions "a supported fix is now available from
Microsoft", and gives a link to a page which asks for
?35 to ring someone. Am I the only one who finds something
wrong here? Shouldn't the fix be available for free to download?

Thanks,

P.

As the KB article should have made clear, you will not be charged for the
support call if it is established that you need the hotfix. The reason you
have to call MS is that the hotfix is sort of a beta; it hasn't been tested
on enough different systems and configurations for MS to offer it freely to
all comers, so they have to make sure that it will work for you. Once it has
been thoroughly tested, it will be included in a service pack.

One common reason for the error message you received (if you were trying to
open the file from Windows Explorer) is that Word needs to be reregistered.
See http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/ReRegisterWord.htm. It does sound as
if you are using Word's File Open dialog, however, so that is unlikely to be
the problem. BTW, if you post back, it would be helpful to know what version
of Word you are using.

Suzanne,
I have been having the same problem for 3 months off and
on. I have been on the phone with Dell for almost 6 hours
total when they finally told me it was a software
application problem and they couldn't fix it. But I am not
using Windows Explorer. My operating system is XP and I am
using Microsoft Word 2002. I save the word documents to a
folder on the harddrive and I save as a copy to a CD. The
icons are showing the files on both the hard drive and the
CD but I get the same error message with both copies. Any
ideas before I throw the whole computer out the window???

If you have Norton Anti Virus, disable the Office Plugin option.

Well, *don't* try to open the docs on the CD, as that will fail for sure.
I'm not sure what the problem might be on the ones on the HD. If they'd been
copied to the HD from a CD, they would be read-only, but you shouldn't get
the message you're getting.

Are you sure that Dell didn't provide a 90-day trial version of NAV with the
computer?

Yes I am sure. And the computer is 2 years old. We use
Mcafee. One of the reply said that the problem could be
saving it to the hard drive from a CD but I save it to the
Hard drive first and then save as to a CD. This is very
important patient information and records that I can not
retrieve. I don't know what to do. Any other suggestions?
We have been trying to get a computer repair person in
here for about 2 weeks but we are located in South Georgia
and we just keep getting hit with hurricaine so no one can
get to use right now because their schedule is overloaded.
Today we are waiting on Ivan to hit us.

If you are using Save As to a CD, then that is a problem. *Do Not Save* to a
CD; Copy or Send to the CD.
