The dropdown button in “open file†makes word crash, help

When I want to open a file in WORD® and use the drop down menu the program
just stop working. It then after a few minutes says “not responding†and I
have to close the program and restart. Please help!
I would like it to work.
I am using MS windows XP Professional Version 2002 service pack 2

Right-click on the My Computer icon on the Windows desktop,
left-click on Disconnect Network Drive, and disconnect any mapped
drives that are not currently available.
