The file _______ is not available

As a preface, I had just today uninstalled Norton
Antivirus. I only put that in there because I do not know
what effect it may have had. Anyways, now whenever I try
to open a Word document it says "The file (insert file
name) is not available." Whenever I try to open an excel
file it says "Unable to read file." I had also just
updated with the latest security patch and have added all
the office updates that are currently available. I am at
a loss as to what has happened. ANY and ALL
help/tips/suggestions/prayers are helpful and appreciated.

BTW, it also wants to know if I want to save changes to
normal.dot when I leave Word each time, but I have done
nothing with that file. I had simply tried to open
another.

If you still had NAV installed, I'd tell you to disable the Office Plug-in,
which is what is causing your problem. Now that you've uninstalled it,
you'll need this advice from Office MVP Beth Melton:

If Norton AV was installed at one time then the DLL for the Office
Plug-in could still be registered.

Search for : officeav.dll

If you find it then go to Start/Run and run the following command:

regsvr32 /u "<path>\officeav.dll"

Here is a KB article that provides a few additional details. It does
not include information on Norton CE but it will contain additional
details on the unregister command if you need them:
