"The file appears to be corrupt"

When I try to access the Style pulldown on the toolbar, I
receive the error "The file appears to be corrupt". The
file appears "uncorrupted" and seems to be otherwise
editable (cut/paste/type, etc.) without incident. Does
anyone know what this really means and how I can fix it?
