We have found that all templates with graphics in the letterhead produce the
reported error "The file {filename} cannot be opened because there are
problems with the contents." I watched the user select a template, type
garbage into it, save the document and then he cannot reopen the newly
created document. All templates have both graphics in them and fields. A
couple of templates were time stamped 2006 but one of them was June 2009. If
we save the document in RTF format, it opens file but rather negates the
purpose of going to 2007. Opening with Open and Repair does not open the
file.

I've seen lots of complaints but not any answers. Is this a bug with the
XML format and is there a patch or fix of some type? Is the problem with the
graphic or with the fields? TIA...

Don't know if this will help. I had same problem with a custom template with
fields. I opened a blank doc, inserted the custom template into it, then
saved and overwrote the original custom template. All the docs opened fine
after that. Would like to know if that works for you.

What John Hawker says is correct. You just overwrote the original custom
template on blank doc. If still you face the problem than you need to repair
your word file with the help of third party tools. Well I hope that above
process helps you. If you need the third party tool than try
