"The file may have been changed by another user since you last saved it"

After installing Office XP on a Windows 2000 terminal
server (and SP3), my end users are recieving the above
error when saving any excel files. I saw in the
knowledgebase document 324491 that this issue was fixed
in SP3, but it appears it has not for me. The only thing
I can think of is that our fileserver is not an MS
server, its a freebsd filserver. but this was not an
issue for us under Office 2000. Does anyone have any
clues on how to fix this?
