Hi - this has nothing to do with Exchange - it's an Outlook issue (OST files
aren't part of Exchange). Try disabling cached mode and closing Outlook -
delete the old OST file, re-open Outlook and re-enable cached mode (restart
again).

If you continue to have problems try posting in microsoft.public.outlook for
more help (and include the exact versions & service pack levels of
everything when you do).

Martin Blackstone

First off I would try to open the email in Outlook Web Access.
If that works, I would probably delete the OST file.
Shut down Outlook.
Navigate to the OST location and delete it.
Then restart Outlook.
Your mailbox will appear empty but then start downloading messages.
Depending on your mailbox size this could take a while.

You appear to have no space left on the disk that houses the OST file.

If the mailbox is extremely large & you've got a FAT32 partition note that
the OST file can't grow beyond 4GB.

No, sorry, just had a look now and my offline .ost file is 3.99GB. dont know
why exchange system mnger is showing 4.6GB...can that be the reason (4gb

Drop to a command prompt and do a chkdsk.
The first think it will tell you is the type. Fat or NTFS.

Right-click on your hard drive in Windows Explorer and go to properties. On
the general tab, check out what it says for File System.

You can convert FAT32 to NTFS easily, and it usually goes very smoothly, but
if you have any data on this computer (as in, stuff that is not synced with
data on a server - your OST file doesn't count) make a backup of your files
first. Note that you cannot convert back from NTFS without third party tools
(although that should never be necessary)

See http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307881 for more help.

OK, i did delete the .ost and my mail are busy downloading again....i'm also
busy deleting unwanted mail while the maildownloading are in progress which
i couldn't do.

I will also archive old mail into a .pst and store it somewhere on my
fileserver.
I hope the above is best practise - thank you for the ideas so far

You can convert to NTFS if you wish.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307881

Honestly if you are running Windows 2000 or higher you should be on NTFS.

Sure.
FAT32 has a max file size of 4GB.
NTFS has a potential 16 TB max file size.

Re: The folder could not be opened. - URGENT

Hi - this has nothing to do with Exchange - it's an Outlook issue (OST files
aren't part of Exchange). Try disabling cached mode and closing Outlook -
delete the old OST file, re-open Outlook and re-enable cached mode (restart
again)

If you continue to have problems try posting in microsoft.public.outlook for
more help (and include the exact versions & service pack levels of
everything when you do).

First off I would try to open the email in Outlook Web Access.

You can convert FAT32 to NTFS easily, and it usually goes very smoothly, but

first. Note that you cannot convert back from NTFS without third party tools

Re: The folder could not be opened. - URGENT
If the mailbox is extremely large & you have got a FAT32 partition note that
the OST file cannot grow beyond 4GB.

Re: The folder could not be opened. - URGENT
"Lanwench [MVP - Exchange]"

....and my mailbox is now on 4.6GB. How do i check if i have FAT32 and if so
even if i try and delete mail i get the message so how do i get rid of mail?

Re: The folder could not be opened. - URGENT

No, sorry, just had a look now and my offline .ost file is 3.99GB. dont know
why exchange system mnger is showing 4.6GB...can that be the reason (4gb
limit) why i get the error - so what do i do to get rid of it?

Drop to a command prompt and do a chkdsk.
