"The item could not be saved..." Error Message

We have a user who has begun experiencing an error message within Outlook
with increasing frequency. Here's what happens...

This particular user almost exclusively works on documents locally out of
Outlook (yeah, I know). He will open up a Word attachment from an email
messsage for example, make a series of edits, and then save the Word document
(back to the email). In recent weeks, he has begun receiving an error
message when attempting to save his edits that states "The item could not be
saved because it has been changed by another user or in another window. Do
you want to make a copy in the default folder for the item?".

In researching this message online, I found the following in the Blackberry
forums:

http://www.blackberryforums.com/bes...could-not-saved-because-has-been-changed.html

Interestingly enough, the user was provisioned with a Blackberry Bold right
around the time these error messages started occurring. This would lead me
to believe that the following may be occurring:

-The user receives the email, opens up the attachment and begins editing
-While the edits are taking place, the email is delivered to his Blackberry,
and when this happens the BES server tags this message within Exchange with
some sort of reference ID
-Because the user opened the message and began editing before the reference
ID was tagged to the message, this causes some type of disconnect between the
message that is open locally via his Outlook client, and the legit message
within Exchange (which has since been tagged by BES with a reference ID)
-This disconnect results in the error message

Could someone shed some light on exactly what is occurring here from an
Exchange/Outlook perspective? I called Blackberry support and they confirmed
that this can indeed be the case. However, the strange thing is that the
user is getting this error message when he attempts to edit documents that he
received days ago (and have long since been delivered to his Blackberry
device). This would seem to fly in the face of my theory here and does not
correlate with what Blackberry told me when I spoke with them.

Has anyone else run into this before? Am I needlessly investigating
Blackberry as the culprit when maybe something else is going on here? I
would really appreciate any thoughts or feedback.

Thanks!
