I received a message and in the Inbox listing it is marked with a bold red
exclamation mark in the left-hand column of the listing. What does it mean
when that left-hand column of the header bar (the exclamation mark) is marked
in a message listing in the inbox message list?

It means that the message is marked as high priority.
