The Microsoft Windows Desktop Search System Component has not been properly installed.

So I downloaded and installed the WDS 3.0 Beta as instructed by OneNote
and the installation said it completed successfully. However, when I
start OneNote 2007 Beta I get an error message that says, "The Microsoft
Windows Desktop Search System Component has not been properly installed.
OneNote will not be able to provide fast search results unless this
Windows component is installed properly."

I searched the KB and can't find a match.

How do I check that it is installed properly and how do I make it install
properly? What could be interfering?

Well, I tried installing the previous version of Windows Desktop Search
and it worked fine. But when I then upgraded it to the 3.0 beta, OneNote
still says that WDS wasn't installed properly.

Does anyone have a clue what could be causing this? I have spent parts of
three evenings on this and OneNote 2007 really isn't worth much to me
without the ability to search within imported .PDF files.

I spent all day Saturday installing WinXP Pro on a spare machine at work,
taking images, and trying the install of OneNote 2007 beta. I made sure
the Windows install was completely standard with no tweaks whatsoever. I
tried it with only SP-2, with all the service packs, and with our school
standard Sophos Anti-Virus installed. Each time I reapplied the image so
the OneNote 2007 beta and the Windows Desktop Search installs were fresh.

It worked perfectly each time.

However, when I tried to install the OneNote 2007 beta and the Windows
Desktop Search on one of our standard images with various security and
performance tweaks then the WDS install had a similar problem to what I
am having at home. A lot of those tweaks were recommended by me and
others were imposed on our department by the university wide IT security
team.

So, this tells me that one of those tweaks is getting in the way of a
proper install of the WDS. As I said in a previous post, the WDS install
always says it was successful but, when you start OneNote 2007 beta, it
still says WDS is not installed properly and that it can't activate the
instant search features. Here's the deal, There is no documentation on
exactly what settings must be set how in order for this to work. The KB
article about WDS 3.0 beta says that terminal services must be running
but nothing else. Needless to say, I have double checked and terminal
services is definitely running.

There are a lot of tweaks to test in order to determine which one is
causing the problem. It would really, really help if someone could at
least point me in the right direction. I feel I am being a pretty
faithful beta tester and am working really hard to find the cause of an
error that will effect lots of people but I have gotten no feedback or
replies whatsoever. I would just switch to GoBinder but it can't search
within documents that have been "printed" to a GoBinder note page. That
is the one main feature that I have been dying to have, which is why I
have been spending so much time trying to get it to work in OneNote 2007
beta.

Well, I have to say that I am very dissappointed that I got absolutely no
replies to my request for help. Not even a bad guess. I finally figured
out what the problem was after several days of working on it. A simple
suggestion could have saved me days of work but I got nothing. Therefore,
I am rather disinclined to provide the solution here. One of my New
Year's resolutions was to stop helping people who have no interest in
helping me.

Sorry Grant that you feel that way. I honestly don't remember seeing
your post.
