I'm a software developer tasked with maintaining a .NET application
that makes use of Interop for mail merge operations.
The mail merge uses a variety of MS Word templates to generate the
final documents. However, the client reported that one of the
templates appeared to have something wrong with it. When it was sent
through to me I could see that in the Header, instead of two Pictures,
there were two small red crosses, exactly like the broken image links
in web pages.
I then sent the "broken" template to the person who designed it, and
she said that when she viewed it on her PC the images displayed
correctly! She has the original images on her C: drive.
This conflicted with my (admittedly miniscule) understanding of how
Word embeds images. I'd assumed that the image was aggregated into
the document wholesale, and not simply linked. I checked this on my
version of Word by creating a document, inserting an image, and then
deleting the original image file. The document was unchanged.
It turns out that the problem is caused by the original template being
created and saved in Word 2003, but the users only have Word 2000. Is
there any known way of converting the template to a Word 2000 template
and retaining the images? I've tried saving the 2003 template as a
2000 document, but the pictures still don't display correctly. FWIW
the images are JPGs.
Thanks
