I have several users that are recieving this error when opening WORD.
"The printer has not yet responded, but the MS office program may be
able to proceed without printer information. Do you want to continue
to wait for the printer?" when opening Word.
If you click No, you can get Word open, but when you click File, Print,
the printer name field is blank, but if you click the drop down, all
the installed printers are listed.

The desktops are running XP Pro SP1. The printer is an LaserJetHP8150.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

You need to select one of the printers as the Windows default. Failing that,
you need to set one of them as the active printer in Word.

The users do have a printer set up as the windows default. Every other
application prints correctly and in the control panel they do have a
default printer configured. How do I set their default printer as the
active printer in Word?

Thank You,
Jennifer

If you open the Print dialog in Word (Ctrl+P), what printer is selected? Is
the driver installed on the local machine?

Normally, when the user opens the print dialog in Word, his windows
default printer is listed. However, when he receives this error upon
opening Word and says "NO" to the message so that Word will open, no
printer is listed in the dialog. The windows default printer is
available in the drop down list to select, but it is not chosen
automatically. The printer is a networked printer and the driver is
installed on the local machine. His default printer is also configured
properly in the control panel and his other applications print
correctly. For example, in Outlook his default printer is
antomatically chosen when he prints and he doesn't receive any similar
message.

In troubleshooting this further, the problem seems to occur most often
when users are opening Word attachments from Outlook.

FWIW, users should not be opening attachments, especially Word documents.
There are numerous risks involved in this behavior (including losing
revisions). Tell them to use Save As to save the documents to a document
folder, then open from there.

I am having the same problem with a user's computer.

She is attempting to open a .doc file by double clicking on it. The file is
located on a networked drive.

She says this only happens when she initially opens word. After she clicks
"yes" to continue, she does not have any problems printing to her default
printer.; however the margins are incorrect and the document freezes. She has
to reboot, open again, then the problem is no longer there. She says it does
not deprive her of completing duties, but it is rather, an annoyance.

I have followed the steps you have laid out; she has a default printer, etc.

Any other suggestions Suzanne?

Thanks,

Tammy, Systems Technical Asst.

I have not been able to resolve this issue. I have given this user a
new computer and a new profile. He did not have problem for about a
week after that, however, it has now returned. Any other ideas would
be great.

Thanks,
Jennifer
