Ok I used the following methods to create a data file
1. I clicked File and then selected Data File Management.
2. Under the Data Files tab, I clicked Add.
3. In the New Data Files dialogue box under types of storage, I selected
Office Outlook Personal Folders File (.pst).
4. I then clicked OK.
5. In the Create or Open Outlook Data File box that appeared, I browsed to
the location that the file will be saved in.
6. In the File name box, I typed the name of the file.
7. Then clicked OK.
8. In the Create Microsoft Personal Folders dialog box, I selected the
name
to be displayed in Outlook for the data file in the Name box.
9. Clicked OK.
10. Received a,â€Requested Operation Failed†error.
This was the point at which I was expecting the file to appear in the
Account Settings under Data Files. It should be from there that I can
access
it with Outlook. E.g. It should appear in the Folder List within Outlook
when
I open it. I am now at the point of re-installing Outlook as a last
resort.

You've only deepened the confusion. Please answer the questions I asked.

Many thanks for this.
1) Firstly, I attempted to add a PST file from the Tools/Account
Settings/Data Files dialogue box. This failed with a "Requested
operation
has
failed" message. I then attempted to import and that also failed. After
the
initial installation of Outlook, I created all my PST files on a
seperate
drive/folder from where Outlook is installed so as to avoid accidental
deletion if my OS needs re- installation. I use Outlook 2007 to access
all
my
emails. Hope this is enough info to go on. Sorry I can't be more
explicit
with this post.
:
Since importing is never the correct way to transfer Outlook data, one
wonders why you are using it. Why the operation might fail would
require
you
to post some actual information. You've posted none. Simple things
like
how
you created the PST file, how you transported it, and how you are
accessing
it would be the most basic information you should provide.

1). When I try to import a PST file I get a "The requested operation
failed"
error in outlook 2007.
2). I need to press alt-F4 to close outlook instead of the normal
way
of
selecting the X in the top right corner. I cannot do anything with
the
three
choices - minimise, maximise or close.
