The same attendee shows up multiple times for the same meeting

Perplexed in NYC

Background
I have set up a meeting request. I add addendee A, B, and C. I send the
meeting request.

Later I come back and the list of attendees shows
A,B,C,A,B,B,A,C,C,C,C,C,C,C,C.

Why does that occur?
