The Save As function has stopped working in word

I am using XP Professional and Word 2003. After installing the security
release last night I cannot use the 'Save As' function in word. Nor can I
insert pictures in word documents.

Now it seems that I cannot open any files from the tool bar. However, if I
use my computer and double click I can get Word to open and then I can edit
the file and save in place. Does anyone have any suggestion?

Same here..but I'm using Microsoft Word 2002 w/ XP. It also happens in Excel
- I can only access files through windows explorer. But the problems first
started when I tried to "save as."
And, like everyone else here, it happened after I did installed the
security release....

It's a bug in this Hotfix which fixes a bug in Explorer, which Automatic
Updates will have installed quite recently:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/Bulletin/ms06-015.mspx

You can remove it from Add/Remove Programs, where it shows as "Security
Update for Windows XP (KB908531)". Make sure the "show updates" box at the
top is ticked or you won't see hotfixes in the list.

Or wait until Microsoft push out an update.

Thanks. I apreciate the response. And it worked.

Discovered that a recent Windows Security update that loaded verclsid.exe was
causing problems with not only Office, but also IE6. Other posts advise
uninstalling the update, running Disk Cleanup, and Disk Check for errors,
then reinstalling the update manually. I have only uninstalled the update so
far, and it has cleared up the problem.

Security Update for Windows XP (KB908531)

I manage four machines. The update works on two, not on one, and the third
will be attempted tonight. The fix noted above fixed the problem on the one
machine (so far) which had a problem.

Several of our machines with the update also didn't have the problem either -
I've not yet worked out if there is a pattern to which PCs are affected.

Thanks a lot for this. I did have the problem with the Save As option but
didn't notice anything unusual with IE. Nevertheless, unistalling the
(KB908531) update solved the problem.

Windows Update keeps prompting me to update that file again, though, and it
doesn't take No for an answer! Don't want to disable the automatic update.

Thanks again for your and BMC's help.

Thanks a lot, Charles. I've checked both websites and I found the latter to
be most informative. Indeed, I have an HP printer installed. But being a
rookie when it comes to computers, I've taken, in my opinion, the safest
approach to solve this. I've resinstalled the *buggy* update, followed MS
advice on how to edit the registry and re-activated the automatic update. My
only problem was with the Save As option, which is working fine, so far. I
think since MS claim that (KB908531) is a High Priority Security Update, it's
better be installed.

Thanks for the tip.The update, KB908531, not only affected Word, but
apparently all of my Office Pro 2000 programs under XP. I couldn't Open, Save
or Save as without the "not responding"message. After removing it I tried
Word, Excel, Publisher and Power Point. They appear, so far, to be working OK
again. Thank you, once again, for the help.

I am using windows vista but appear to have the same problem. Is there a
security update that I can remove?

That may be a symptom of a Word Data Key corruption - usually because Word
has been running when updates are installed.

Symptoms of Data Key corruption may include:

• The mouse does not work when you use Word.
• You cannot open a Word document from the Search window in Windows
Vista.
• You cannot open a Word document from Windows Desktop Search.
• Word crashes when you try to start or exit Word.
• Word crashes when you open the Open dialog box.
• Word crashes when you save a document.
• Word crashes when you close a document.

See MSKB 940791 http://support.microsoft.com/kb/940791 and click on the FIX
button.
