"The system cannot find the file specified"

I recently started getting an annoying error when trying to open Word
attachments from Outlook 2007 e-mails or from Windows Explorer. This only
happens when Word is not actively opened when I double-click the filename. It
does not happen with Excel, PowerPoint, Acrobat, or other applications.

In each case, I double click the file name, Word opens and then I get an
error message in the original application (Outlook or Explorer):

In Outlook, I get the error: "The system cannot find the file specified"
In Explorer, I get the errror: "Windows cannot find '[path/filename]'. Make
sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again."

In all cases, if I close the error box and then try re-opening the file (now
that Word has launched), the file opens.

If it matters, I run AVG as my antivirus.

This error just started in the last week. It's annoying, since my job causes
me to open numerous attachments throughout the day. Can you help fix this?

yes, i am getting the same thing for all office documents. word, excel,
powerpoint. Vista 32 bit business with office 2k7 and all
updates/patches/fixes/registry tweaks available on google to try to resolve
the issue. thus far, absolutely nothing has worked. i am in a company with
roughly 50 computers and we have had this issue happen on 4 of them now. we
use nod32 for anti virus, but this is new so i would count that out. i am not
100% sure what causes it, cleaning out temp files has done nothing, starting
in safe mode, starting the apps in safe mode. so far the only fix is to wipe
out the system and start again from scratch and hope to god it doesn't happen
again. i was hoping service pack 1 for vista would solve it, but no dice.
this is a fairly old bug, i first saw it at least 6 months ago. best advice -
stick with xp and office 2003, or linux and openoffice.org from Sun. Spending
over 500 bucks for software that will most likely fail to a point you have a
10% chance you are going to have to wipe a machine within a few months due to
it just failing and not doing what it said it would and the vendor providing
no solution to the issue at all is quite unacceptable.

A manager at my place of business started getting this message. It seems
like there are a few attempts at solutions on the web out there but no actual
fixed for Word documents exhibiting this behaviour. What a pain in the butt.

I had the same problem. It was fixed after I changed the default program that
open's .docx from 'Microsoft Word Viewer' to 'Microsoft Office Word':
Right click a Word document
Open With
Choose Default Program

We are experiencing that too. We have about 80 workstations with XP Pro and
only 2 of them have that issue. We've looked at the registry posiblities,
all the way down to extension mapping. So far, nothing has worked and I have
not found any MS update that would resolve this issue either.

We haven't installed anything new, in fact we've been running with it since
January with little to no problems. We are using McAfee and do not use
Exchange or Outlook for e-mail, so I doubt that it's a problem steming from
Outlook.

So far, it seems to be just Word 2007, although I did see one instance of
Access, but it only did it once and didn't do it again. We are monitoring
that.

Any other suggestions?

Umm, thanks, however, as stated, we are using Office 2007, not 2003. We are
not having a compatibility issue as such your article suggests.

The problem is as listed above others, clicking on a word document or its
shortcut causes the Can't find ... error message to pop up. If we open Word
and then do the File->Open and select the document, then it opens.

Did you ever get this solved? I am having same problem and no one knows why
or how to fix it.

No, unfortunately not.  We are still working on the issue as well.

Had this problem. Fixed this problem. Don't know how it got "broke"
but my fixed worked fine. Here's what I did:
-> I changed the "Open" command to have an extra set of quote
marks...and everything was fixed.
specifically what i did was:
-> Go to My computer folder, menu TOOLS then menu FOLDER OPTIONS then
select the FILE TYPES tab.
->Scroll down to the file extension causing problems (XLS or DOC or
both)
-> Click the ADVANCED button, click the OPEN action, click EDIT
-> Change the APPLICATION USED TO PERFORM ACTION from
==== "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\OFFICE11\EXCEL.EXE" /e %1
to
==== "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\OFFICE11\EXCEL.EXE" /e "%1"

(NOTE that the %1 at the end of the line is in quotes in the NEW and
CORRECT version)

ONCE THIS CHANGE was made the problem was fixed.

Do you all have "Business contact Manager"?
I had the same problem, remove the business contacgt manager, and the
problem was solved!
Go to control panel, and remove it.
Good luck.

I am using Word 2007 (Office Professional) on Windows XP. I do not have
Business Contact Manager installed. I have tried the solutions mentioned and
none work. For me, however, it only afffects Word, not Excel. Has anyone come
up with any other solutions?

This solution worked for me. Changed the default viewer, and everything
works fine now. Thanks.
