The system is dangerously low in resources

When I try to open Word, I get an error message stating, "The system is
dangerously low in resources." Then I am asked if I'd like to stop running
the program. From then on, my computer freezes and I have to restart. It
doesn't happen with any other programs. I've used Excell and surfed the net
just fine. I followed some help tips on the microsoft help page about
changing the name from .whatever it was to .old and that didn't help. I
uninstalled Office and reinstalled it and that didn't help. Any suggestions?
