The text in my document is overtyping itself all on the left!

I've created a document, and when typing on the footer - it's started
overtyping itself. So each letter I press, simply goes ontop of the other (
not replaces - as in over type) all on the left - so I get a big black
splodge. The only way to cure this problem has been to abandon the document
and start again. Has anyone else had this problem and have you sorted it ? is
it something obvious I have missed ?

According to contributor Bob Buckland: "It's a bug that somehow seems to
have Word misreading temporary files related to the printer currently in
use. You can usually 'unscramble' the display from File=>Print and switch
to the printer properties or to another printer then your normal one, or
close Word and delete all files found on Start=>Search and looking for
~$*.*;*.tmp as the name string then restarting Word." See also
