Since you don't specify what "toolbox items" you're referring to it's
impossible to give you a meaningful direct answer. However, virtually every
command in the various palettes of the Toolbox are available as individual
commands via Tools> Customize Toolbars and Menus. You can create custom
toolbars & add the commands you wish. But take into consideration that the
palettes of the toolbox but somewhere in the neighborhood of 3-400
features/commands & settings at your fingertips. Even if you only want 10%
of them, a toolbar with 30-40 buttons can't help but be more cumbersome &
intrusive. Depending on how many commands you intend to include I think
you'll find that the Toolbox is far more efficiently designed than it may
seem at first glance... Especially when you take into consideration its
contextual functionality which can't be added to toolbars.
Are you aware that you can flip the Toolbox over [using the bent arrow at
the right end of its title bar] & change the nature & content of it in a
number of ways? Or that you can use its minimize button or double-click its
title bar to collapse it. Or that you can then use the same button or click
any of its palette buttons to expand it again? Or that you can use the
Toolbox button on the Standard toolbar to toggle the whole palette on/off as
needed?
I'm not trying to dictate anything to you & that's why Word is as
customizable as it is... Everyone has their own preferred methods, which is
fine. My only point is that many times something new doesn't seem like "a
very bright idea" simply because it's different than what we're accustomed
to. As we find out more about it & learn to take advantage of how it can be
more effectively used it may prove to be more beneficial than we realized.
