The update cannot be applied - ERROR

I keep getting "The update cannot be applied" error when trying to do Auto
updates or even a manual update. With a manual it appears to get about 3/4
through the process and them pops up an error "The update cannot be
applied".

This is happening on KB913161, 913807 and 905756.

The problem now is that every time I shut down it asks me if I want to
instal and then shutdown... I do.

The pop up advises me not to switch off and appears to go through the 3 up
dates ie 1 of 3 then 2 of 3 etc etc

However on restarting I find they have still failed and when I shut down I
get the same message...

I have had enough!!! Let me update or how do I stop the failed updates ?

Hi Mark -- When I had this problem, I had good luck resolving it by
reinstalling service pack 2. I had to reinstall it from CD, rather than
download, but it seemed to solve the problem. (Had an entire classroom full
of computers that would not update and was pulling my hair out!)

It would not let me re install SP2 or Office ??

I did an uninstall, then reinstall, then SP2 and the the updates worked ??

I can only think that the reg is getting screwed some where ???
