The US dictionary that won't go away

I have my computer set to UK English. The problem is that WORD keeps
re-setting itself to US English. I followed the instructions to change
back - but it doesn't want to know.

This insistence of the programme is not helpful. Can I throw out
dictionaries I don't use (like US, Australian etc)?

Hi John,

You should open the Normal template in WOrd, select all and switch the
language to UK English through the Tools:Language command. Save it and
relaunch Word. That should do the trick for all new documents.

Sure, but if the document is set to US English, the UK dictionary won;t
take over for spelling and grammar checking,

John:

Yes, you can.

You can also:

1) Edit your Normal template
2) Select all, making sure you have the paragraph mark selected...

Even a "blank" Normal template has a single paragraph in it, and that's what
stores all the settings in it.

3) Choose Tools>Language>Set Language and choose UK English
4) Click the DEFAULT button and say "Yes" when prompted.
5) Go to Format>Style and change the Language of Normal style to your
required language. (This 'should' have changed when you did step 4). Then
check any other styles you use: if they are based on Normal, they should
have picked up the change, but if you are a document professional, you will
have broken that link and will need to set them manually.

But be aware that there is a catch: If you open documents containing
anything other than UK English, and you have uninstalled the proofing tools
for the document language, spelling functions will be disabled in that
document.

I think you will find that just doing 1 to 5 will suffice.

Cheers
