the word "null" and the punctuation mark "/" show up in every Word email attachment I send

Hello,

I am running OS 10.4.8 on a MacBook Pro. I installed MS Office 2004 in
late December 2006. Sometime in January 2007 every MS Word document
email attachment gets "null/" attached to the front end of the file
name. As an example, if I create a Word document named "DogPhotos.doc"
it is received as "null/DogPhotos.doc." In addition, just today, it
appeared in a .pdf I sent without the "/". That was a first.

I've searched Apple Support/Discussions and Microsoft/Mactopia and not
found any mention of the problem.

If none of you have had this problem, I'll re-install MS Office 2004
and re-post if the problem goes away.

Thank you.

Although I don't have the solution, I would suggest that you not be too
hasty about reinstalling Office - that will most likely be a waste of time &
result in perpetuating the same problem... And perhaps even create others.
Further, it doesn't seem from your post that it is Word that's adding the
string when you save the file - the actual name of the file doesn't change
on your system, right? It arrives that way on the *other* end.

That suggests that the stuff is being added by a) your email software -
which you don't mention, b) the recipient's end, or c) somewhere in between.
So, if you *are* using E'rage you may want to post in that group, although
you may very well get an appropriate response here. (I haven't forwarded for
you as it isn't clear what client you're using.) The folks over there are
very well informed on related issues, but not all of them monitor this group
as closely. If you're using a different email client a support source for
that client may be more effective.

It is received by whom?

Which email program are you using to send?

How (exactly, numbered steps...) are you sending the email?

Re-installing is not going to alter anything. This is a preference/setting
problem, and reinstalling does not alter those.

Someone posted something similar, but with more information, a while
back. My guess then was that as they said they were using Hotmail or
some such to send attachments, Hotmail was appending the "null" because
it saved the documents in a temporary folder.

Is this causing a problem or just an oddity you want to solve? The
attachments arrive fine, right?

Based on the question "what email service are you using," I logged on
to the one I'm having the problem with - Earthlink - and found that
it is an Earthlink issue. It has nothing to do with MS Office for Mac
2004 as several of you noted. Thank you for your suggestions not to re-
install Office for Mac. Importantly, the error word "null" does not
affect the integrity of the attachment.

Earthlink has it on their list to fix and say they will do so with the
next update.
