I am using a them in FP2002 and I would like to know where FP stores the
background file for it. What file would it be in so I can use it on another
site not being created with FP?

It will be in one of the _derived or _themes folders. Though you probably
cannot get to those via FrontPage.

You could always visit using a browser, then right-click on the background
and choose "save image as".
