There are too many edits in the documents.

I am trying to edit a template I created in MS Word 2003 - there are no
special macros or controls, just a simple protected template with fields.

When I try to make a change to the template, I am getting the following
message: "There are too many edits in the document. This operation will be
incomplete. Save your work."

I can't make the change (erasing a table line or moving data from one cell
to another) I was trying to make; although, I can make some changes (adding
a row, adjusting cell height).

Any help would be greatly appreciated - I don't want to recreate the template!

Sounds like it may be partially corrupt. Try opening the dot file using the
Open and Repair function from the Word, File Open dialog.

Is "Track changes" turned on for that template? Then perhaps try to accept
all changes and turn it off.

I dimly remember seeing an insane number of fields (in the header) created
by "Track changes", which caused this error message.
(Just a wild guess though that it applies in your case)
