There is a problem with the Office database

Version: 2008
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
Processor: Power PC

I've recently upgraded to 2008. I keep getting a database error on startup and I think it's causing Word to crash constantly.

I've done a total uninstall, and re-install but I get the same problem. The Microsoft Database Utility app won't let use any of the options, the continue button isn't active. And the Microsoft Database Daemon app won't launch at all.

It crashes when I try to save from a custom template. Insert from picture fails on second attempt and I have to re-start the app each time.

It just crashes generally, applying styles, saving docs. It's pretty much unusable.

Could anyone offer any help?

Come on!! This is a peer support grouP. You can't expect people to
*immediately* answer your posts. On top of that, it's a group in
English, with a bunch of users in the US and when you posted, it was
really early in the morning. Give us a few minutes :->

Are you up to date?? You should be in Office 12.1.2 by now,
I've done a total uninstall, and re-install but I get the same problem.
The Microsoft Database Utility app won't let use any of the options, the
continue button isn't active. And the Microsoft Database Daemon app
won't launch at all.

Launch Entourage pressing the Option key down. This should trigger the
database utility. After that, use the Repair button to attempt to repair
the database.

Well if it's not the updates and the database, you can also consider
trashing some of your Office preferences and maybe even the Normal
template. Try the steps one by one first though,

You can also do the usual maintenance on your Mac:
- Use DiskUtility to repair permissions on your Mac.
- Reboot on the Leopard DVD and in the menus, use DiskUtility to repair
the hard drive (then reboot again normally, don't attempt to install
anything ;-) ).
- use an application like Onyx (free) to clear system, user and font
cache.

Hello Monoboy -

The only time I've seen this is where the User Account had not been
allocated sufficient privileges. As a result the Office components aren't
allowed to interact as they need to. That's the first thing I'd look at.

BTW, the Daemon isn't an application a user can launch & do anything with ‹
it's one of those components used by the software.

I have to echo Corentin's sentiments... This is a news group, not a Support
Hotline. It isn't uncommon for postings to not even show up for several
hours based on a number of variables. If you need urgent assistance more
rapidly than volunteer users can supply you'll need to contact MS Tech
Support by phone or email. Most of us do what we can to help, but we don't
sit around staring at the screen waiting to pounce on a new post the instant
it appears... And even we need to get some sleep once in a while :)

Another thing to keep in mind ‹ Reinstalling Office *rarely* corrects
anything because the programs themselves do not typically go sour. There are
numerous other reasons for things to not work as they should & reinstalling
doesn't address very many of them. In fact, if not done in a very thorough &
meticulous manner reinstalling can both complicate the original issue as
well as cause other problems that compound the situation further.
