Thesaurus switches to Reference Tools

I have a hard time with the thesaurus sometimes. Instead of giving me
the synonyms of a word that I KNOW is there, it will give me the
dialogue box Reference Tools instead. If I try to access the thesaurus
there, I get an error beep. I just found a word in thesaurus and
closed the window, then went back to check it again but got the
Reference Tools window instead. Any suggestions? Thanks!

What version of Word and OS?

The only Thesaurus I ever get is in Reference Tools--if I've lost it, I can
click on the books icon at the top of Reference Tools and then expand the
arrow for Thesaurus.

But it sounds like you are getting a different Thesaurus. More information
needed, I think.

I'm using MS Word from Office 2004 with OS 10.3.5. The reference tool
doesn't allow the Thesaurus to work. Any suggestions... Thanks!

As is Daiya, I'm a little confused as you don't mention version & the
problem isn't clear. Exactly how are you "accessing" the Thesaurus?

In 2004 the Thesaurus *is* one of the Reference Tools & presents in the same
palette as the Dictionary. Unfortunately it doesn't automatically pick up on
a specific word even if you highlight the word, then click the Toolbox
button. OTOH, if you simply click in the word then go to Tools>Thesaurus it
*will* present for that word. Once looked up, the word will remain in the
list at the top of the Dictionary/Thesaurus palette, although it doesn't
continue to be visible in the box. You can select it from the list to
display the results again.

You can also Rt+click (Ctrl+click) a word & get a list of synonyms in the
contextual menu as well as a listing for the Thesaurus. Selecting one of the
synonyms replaces the word in your doc, whereas selecting Thesaurus produces
the palette which, in this case, does pick up on the targeted word.

If this doesn't help resolve the issue, please provide more specific
details.
