Edward\(News\)

After many happy years with Word 97 I have suddenly lost my Thesaurus. It is
so long since I last used it, I can't think of anything I might have done to
cause its demise.

My OS is Win XP Home...

I would appreciate any help

Thanks, Beth.

I've printed it off and will sort it out later. If I have any problems, I'll
get back to you.

Best wishes,

Ed

Hi, Beth.

Did everything by the book but things are a ittle worse - if anything.

I fdirst of all tried the simple route - changing the registry entry for
msth_en.lex to msthbus.lex. This didn't work so I put things back as they
were and followed the bigger suggestion which included a "Reinstallation"
off the CD. I then reinstalled SR1 & 2.

Now I get the message "Word cannot find the thesaurus file msth_EN.lex for
English (United Kingdom) - I also tried (United States).

I am confident I did nothing to upset the registry.

Have you any suggestions before I reinstall from scratch?

Kind regards,

Ed

Yes. Everything seemed to be okay. I have SR1 & 2 on file and that went okay
too.

Sorry, Beth. I may not have made that clear.

I tried method 2 first and it didn't work.

The longer method (1) seemed to go okay. It was after this that the quoted
error message showed.

Hi, Beth.

[I'm tucking this message in hoping you'll get to it before ending your
day]!

It's getting very late here in the UK so I thought I would put this to you
before I went to bed!!

I seem to be getting nowhere with this problem. I decided to uninstall and
reinstall but after inserting the 97 CD got the error message:
"Setup cannot access the required initialisation file
E:\C:\PROGRA~1\MICROS~2\OFFICE\SETUP\OFF97PRO.INF".

I checked both drives - C:\ and the disc (E:\) - and the file exists okay on
both.

Could the file on C:\ be corrupt and would it be a good idea to drag the
file out of E:\ and overwrite the C:\ version?

I can still use Office okay - it's only the thesaurus that's missing. Just
bugs me!

I hope you don't mind - it will be some time before I get to check back.
It's about 11.30 p.m. here.

Best wishes,

Ed

What *.lex files are available?

Also, was the installation of SR2 successful? They replaced the
Thesaurus in SR2 to remove any potentially offensive phrases.

Hi, Beth.

There are 24 .lex files.
14 in C:\Program files\Common files\Microsoft Shared\Proof.
4 in C:\Windows\Last Good\\System32\DllCache.
5 in C:\Windows\System32\DllCache
1 in C:\Windows\srchasst

In ...\Proof msthbus.lex and msth_am.lex are present.

I posted a message before your last response describing a problem when
trying an uninstall/reinstall where the CD will not initiate Setup as
OFF97PRO.INF cannot be accessed..

The main question there is can I drag a file (OFF97PRO.INF) off the CD to
overwrite the same file on the C:\ drive, which may be corrupt?

Thanks for your patience.

Sorry, Beth.

I forgot to mention... As far as I know the SR2 installation was okay. No
error messages or hesitations.

Hi Ed,

No, unfortunately you can not copy an *.inf file to the CD. The
installation is looking for a specific file.

If you are able to locate the file yourself then an updated
OFF97PRO.INF should be located in:
Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\Setup

If you still encounter the error in the Thesaurus then try the
following:

- Insert the installation CD
- Go to Start/Run and navigate to Setup.exe
- Back on the Run command at the end of the command add: /y /r

It would look something like:

"D:\Setup" /y /r

Note the spaces before the forward slashes.

This command will recreate the Registry entries for Office.

Hi, Beth.

I ran the cammand but no luck, I'm afraid. Everything okay except no
Thesaurus.

I think you may have misunderstood me earlier... When I tried uninstalling
from Add or Remove Progams [with the 97 cd in its drive] I got the error
message:

"Setup cannot access the required initialisation file
E:\C:\PROGRA~1\MICROS~2\OFFICE\SETUP\OFF97PRO.INF". (Yes, it does start
E:\C:\)!

On the hard-drive C:\ the file OFF97PRO.INF is in the stated place so
presumably it is corrupted and can't be seen.

It is on the 97 CD, of course, so what I asked was, can I drag it off the CD
into C:\Program\Microsoft\Office\Setup to overwrite the existing version?

Please be gentle with me!!

Hi Edward,

If the path starts with E:\C:\ then I don't think the problem is due
to a corrupt *.inf file but rather an issue in your Acme.lst file.
Take a look at this KB article and see if you have:
E:\C:\PROGRA~1\MICROS~2\OFFICE\SETUP\OFF97PRO.INF" listed in the
Acme.lst file. If so then modify the file according to the
instructions:

Thanks for this, Beth.

Worked fine. Got the CD back, took the plunge and uninstalled/reinstalled.
All back to normal.

I'm very grateful for your help and patience.

Best wishes,

Ed

Hi Edward,

Sorry I missed the "E:\C:\" reference until you emphasized it. Too bad
fixing one issue created another!

In any event I'm glad to hear it is all finally sorted. :)
