Hi there,

I recently removed and re-installed Access 2000 only to find that I get the error 'This action is only valid for products that are currently installed' when double-clicking a MDB file. I have removed and re-installed Office 2000 a number of time but the problem still persists.

There are some references to this problem but none of them have helped. I am running Office 2000 on XP.

Help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,

Related knowledge base articles to the error you are encountering are the
following:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;EN-US;233529

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;EN-US;238387

Should they not help then I would recommend that you download the Windows
Installer Cleanup utility and use it to remove Microsoft Office. Once you
removed it via the Windows Installer Cleanup utility reinstall Microsoft
Office.

I hope this helps! If you have additional questions on this topic, please
respond back to this posting.

Hi there,

The two knowledge base articles you mention have not helped - they relate to 95,98 & ME where I am running XP.

I have tried the Windows Installer Cleanup utility but that has not helped either. I used it to remove Office and then re-installed.

I have also noticed that the .mde and .mdb file extensions have no icons associated to them i.e. the usual Access icons. If I check the file extension associations through Explorer (Tools | Options | File Types) then they are associated to Access.

Any further help would be appreciated.

The only thing I can think of is to perform clean install.

- Create another Admin Profile account
- Use Windows Installer Cleanup utility again
- Reboot the machine
- Delete the folder \Program Files\Microsoft Office
- Delete the registry keys
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Office
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Office
- Reboot the machine
- Ensure no Anti-Virus software in loaded nor running
- Reinstall Office

I hope this helps! If you have additional questions on this topic, please
respond back to this posting.

Unfortunately, none of your suggestions have worked. What is the significance of creating another Admin user profile?

I guess the only option left is format C and re-install - I don't really want to go down this route because it will take a whole day.

Thanks for your help anyway!

Before you format I would recommend you create another Admin profile
account.

It could be an issue where your profile is corrupted.

Installing it on another profile and it works will conclude that it was a
corrupted profile issue.

I hope this helps! If you have additional questions on this topic, please
respond back to this posting.
