hi everybody...

when I start typing an address like,

Max Maxfield
Mainst 111
....

after hitting 'Return' each time the following error message pops up:

"This command is not available in this Version of Microsoft Word"

Any ideas?

You wouldn't be running "TypeItForMe" or some other add-in would you?

That error message means "Someone sent me a VBA command, and there's no VBA
in this version."

office is out of the box! no add-ins installed whatsoever.
I haven't made any changes to the normal.dot template, ...

the error message appears also on macs in computer stores, etc. have you tried it?

I get the same error message in a plain vanilla Word document, it appears randomly when hitting return

office 2008 12.0.1

I am running TypeIt4Me -- latest version (which was apparently a
significant upgrade for Leopard).

Most of the time it works fine. Occasionally it makes Word -- and
everything else -- hang for several minutes at a time. I *think* it has
something to do with typing speed.

It very occasionally happens in other apps, so I think it has less to do
with Word than Leopard and my processor speed (I'm on a machine that
only just meets the minimum requirements to run Leopard). However, it
happens far more often with Word than any other app.

It doesn't do it here. Yes, I have tried it, just once or twice

It's certainly a bug. I am afraid you are going to have to use Help>Send
feedback... To report the bug.

I suggest that you give as much detail as you can, because we've never seen
that bug before, and I doubt that Microsoft has either.

Until they fix it, you may be able to prevent the bug by deselecting all of
the options to do with Contacts in Word>Preferences>AutoCorrect>AutoText

I use TypeIt4Me all the time. and I've never seen it interfere in anyway
with Word up to and including 2008. I use it under X.3.9 and X.4.11

happens with me too. for example: i would have the string: zürich, 2. mai 2008 and would try to put in a 1 in front of the 2, the error would pop up (This command is not available in this Version of Microsoft Word). after clicking 'ok' the 1 would be inserted never the less..
It got to the point where I deinstalled 2008 and returned to 2004. this is not software suitable for productive use.

Disabling the AutoText features didn't help and I don't have "TypeItForMe" installed either. By now I have switched to Pages because Word has been rendered unusable by this bug. At random instances the pop up window appears with exactly that message, usually after hitting return, but not limited to that. Quite annoying, and something I don't have the time or nerves to deal with when I'm trying to work.

my apologies again for you know what...

I am not the original poster, but I have the same problem. I found a
way to reproduce the bug on all of my machines, some with straight out
of the box Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac installed, starting from a
blank document. So I cannot imagine that it is some VBA macro that is
lingering around. Also another question: if it were a VBA macro, how
would I disable it? I could also send you my normal.docx if that would
help.

The Versions of Word/OS and Computer I am using:
Microsoft Word 2008 for Mac, Version 12.1.1 (080522), Latest Installed
Update: 12.1.1
Mac OS X 10.5.4 Build 9E17
Macbook 2.4 GHz Core 2 Duo, 24" iMac 2.8 GHz Core 2 Duo, 20" iMac 2.4
GHz Core 2 Duo

So here is the way to reproduce it on my machines:

1. File->New Blank Document

2. start typing a German style city with the ZIP-code like you would
in a German address (without quotation marks) "12345 Germantown"

3. then hit enter. If I do this, the error message pops up.

4. After that, every time I hit delete and then any key, I get the
error message again.

All this makes Word pretty much unusable for me for writing a German
letter. It's hard for me to imagine that Microsoft Germany didn't see
that bug yet, since I would assume that one of the main uses in
Germany is writing letters, so maybe something is special about my
computers (and the other posters computers). It is pretty annoying and
I am thinking hard about downgrading back to 2004.

Please let me know if you can reproduce the bug on your machine.

I will also submit the bug to microsoft, once I get around to find
their feedback page. I'll post workarounds/fixes to the group (if I
get any, I never submitted a bug to microsoft, so far everything
worked well enough for me).

The bug is really annoying. I never knew how often I hit that stupid
delete button.

Any help/suggestions are greatly appreciated.

application under Help->Send Feedback About Word) and submitted some
feedback. They specifically told me that they will not get back to me.

There is another thing I just found out. The default language needs to
be German (Tools->Language... Highlight "German", click "Default" and
hit "Yes"). Switching it to English (U.S.) fixes it in my case. Just
as a workaround for now, but I lose German spellchecking, which is
also kind of annoying (not as annoying as hitting the "Okay" button
every time I used the delete-key, though).

They "say" they won't respond, and usually they mean it, but if you find
anything interesting, trust me, they will be all over you like a rash. The
"Send Feedback" page is where Microsoft is actually READING what we say.

In here, they're NOT. This is a user-to-user forum that Microsoft rarely
visits, and almost ever responds in.

Hi Lars:

This is a known bug, and they are working on it.

I think it is caused by AutoCorrect. I don't think anyone with an "English"
version of Word can repro this one, I believe it is specific to some
internationalised versions.

I believe that if you turn off the AutoCorrect madness, the problem will go
away. So will the AutoText, but hell, you can type your own addresses,
right?

Start by going to Word>Preferences and turning OFF everything in the
AutoText tab of the Autocorrect pane. I think that will fix it.

If not, turn off everything in "Auto format as you type".

If that doesn't fix it, turn off everything in "Autoformat".

If any of them fix it, please report back here for the benefit of other
German writers
