This file does not have a program associated with it

Im a college student and i cannot open any of the microsoft office programs
because a pop up shows up that says "this file does not have a program
associated with it for perfoming this action. Create an association in the
Set Associations control panel". I tried to figure out what to do and
nothing will work. All of my projects and papers are saved on microsoft
office and i cannot open any thing i really need to get this fixed! please
help!
